I am trying to restore my dnn site to a previous version.

I backed up the database and have the .bak ready to restore. I've made a full copy of the entire content files.

My last install was from 6.2.8 to 7.3.2 - this gave me the error below.

I therefore, tried to restore back to 6.2.8, however, I still get the same error even though it said my database .bak file was successfully restored.

Is it best to upgrade my .net Framework (no matter which version I roll back to) or can I fix the restored database files somehow?

if you restore your files from a previous version, please make sure to delete existing files of newer version, otherwise you end up with a mix and some new files, which are not supported.
if you want to upgrade from DNN 6 to DNN 7, I suggest getting it to run on .Net 4 first. you may apply the .Net4 merge script in install folder to adopt web.config.

Restore the database AND the full website folder, from a consistent point before the upgrade. That will get you back to the older version.

right, but if you are restoring into a folder, where you upgraded to a newer version, you need to remove all (or at least all additional) files.

Sebastian is correct. I assumed restore meant
- remove (or at least empty) the folder
- recover the contents

The plan being to get back to the exact same bits as before the upgrade attempt.

Best wishes,
