there is also http://dnnyafnet.codeplex.com

Thanks, that's good to know.  I didn't realize there was a DNN version of YAF, it doesn't show up in the DNN store.  It looks like a decent forum though, and the support forum looks like anyone posting a question there might actually get a response.  At least now I can have a backup plan if I can't get AF working.

I got YAF to install but it gave a null reference error when creating a new board.

On a fresh install of DNN followed by a fresh install of Active Forums, the search crash bug went away. The broken user file selector bug also went away. I guess I have to rebuild the site one module at a time to see which one breaks it.

I fear it is a data issue, some missing reference or sth. similar, but it is hard to identify, you need to check stack trace in the associated eventlog entry.

I still get the problem of all user uploads going into Portals\_Default\User instead of Portals\0\User, even right after a fresh install of DNN. Is that just the way it works now? In older versions the file uploads went into Portals\0\Users.

I think it is indeed a data issue.  I went back to the site with the problem and removed the forum, then reinstalled it and the search problem no longer occurs.  I am trying to migrate data over from an older version of Active Forums, so somewhere in that process I must be breaking it.
