Hi,

I have a new DNN site I'm currently developing. I've been working on for a couple of months now. BTW - I'm the only one with access to the admin and host account

Yesterday when trying to log in to the admin account I got a password not valid error message. I try again but get the same error message. So, I went ahead and logged in to the host account and confirmed that the admin account was there. So, as a test I just changed the password to the original password. Now, normally DNN won't let me change a password to the current stored password, it has to be different. But in this case it let me. So, from that I assumed that somehow the password had gotten corrupted.

Today, I logged into the site with the admin account a few times for updates without issue, then this afternoon I log in to the admin account and the same error -- the password isn't valid.

I Log back in with the host account, and view the admin account. I "change" the password to the current password and this time DNN won't let me. Which is how it normally behaves when the new password matches the current password. So, I cancel the "change password" option and log out. Now, I try to log in again with the admin account and the most recent password and I still get the "invalid" password error.

So, I log back in again with the host account and change the admin password to a completely new password and after logging out, I can now log in with the admin account.

Just as a precaution I created another admin account and another host account in case this happens again and I lose host access...

Has anyone else seen DNN (7.3.4) behaving like this? Is this sort of thing a known issue?

Thanks.

Jim

Jim,
this is not a known issue, is there are Special character in your Password, which might get encoded in some Situation?
Did you check the DNN Event Log for Pw Change types (You might Need to enable logging for this Event type).

Hi Sebastian,

The only special character I use is an "!" (exclamation point) and I have used this character in passwords on all the DNN sites I manage for years without any issues. Are you saying that it "might" be the issue or should I avoid any characters other than alpha / numeric in passwords? Does the password input routine in DNN scan for invalid characters?

Thanks again!

Jim

Jim,
please try whether you experience the same issue, when using a password without special character - there might be missing an HTMLdecode.

Hi,

I had used the password with the exclamation point for a couple of months without issue, then one day it stopped working. So something changed. But, I have reset the password to remove all special characters. It's now 16 random alpha / numeric characters. So it is pretty secure. It this password shows the error in the future I'll report it back here.

Thanks again!
