Excellent walkthrough, finally got it working now! Only thing which is tobad is that you have to do some settings on the client to auto-login

If you have access to AD, then you can create a policy to force all of your Intranet computers to recognize your domain as being in the "Intranet Zone" in IE.  That will keep you from having to change each computer manually (saved me a heck of a lot of work with 1200+ computers!).

Dan, I have an intranet of 350+ users and have this exact need. I also need a script to change their existing accountname to "firstname.lastname" to take advantage of User Principal Naming (UPN) format. Is this policy text available somewhere?

I'm not sure what you are referring to with "firstname.lastname" part, so I can't help you much there.

You can add your domain to the local Intranet settings in IE via GPO.  The policy is in User->Windows Settings->Internet Explorer Maintenance->Security/Security Zones and Content Ratings->Security Zones and Privacy->Local intranet (Security Leve: Custom).  Add *.yourdomain.com to the "Sites in this zone" setting.

The only problem I've encountered with this setting is that if someone has a laptop, and plugs it into their home network, it will still think that your domain is on the Intranet, and authentication to things like OWA doesn't work properly.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it.

What I was saying about the names is that I have one form of account name... basically first initial and last name like "hsaville" and I want to change all 350 user account names in Active Directory to firstname.lastname (i.e. "hal.saville"). I realize this is not strictly a DNN thing but rather Active Directory manipulation. But I look for talent where I find it.

Anyway If you or someone else has this expertise in modifying a whole group of accountnames by script rather than individually, I'm very interested. Thanks

Have you checked out the DSADD or DSMOD commands yet?  They're part of the Support Tools, which you can install from the server CD.  Those might give you the scriptability that you need.  I used them to script add/mod over 3000 accounts each year.

Fantastic walk through - I had it up and running in minutes.

Now, how can I give people anonymous access to the site, but the login page would have them login to the domain?

Thanks,
RushB

Anyone? I want the site to navigable (sp?) by anyone, and only ask for the username/password when clicking on the login link. Is there also a way to set the domain somewhere in the script, much like you can for Outlook Web Access so you don't have to put the domain in front of the username?

This is for a school web site, so I need it to be simple.

Thanks,
RushB

I run it for a school website also, and there is no easy answer for you.  I had to "comment out" the authentication line in the web.config file, and point everyone to the windowsignin.aspx file to get it working.  Otherwise, everyone, including the general public, would get a login prompt upon visiting the website.

Dan how did you point everyone to windowsignin.aspx? Through GPO? The problem I run into with that is that I can't affect the GPO for the whole school but only our OU and so far any changes I try to make manually to my settings are immediately overwritten by the GPO.
