Hello,
the feature described here http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/dnn-404-handling#9ea7e047-36cc-4b12-b1f6-bc90be5d3f52 never worked for me; I have now a fresh 8.0.3 installation (using a blank template) but the 404 page was not created during install and no AUM_ErrorPage404 parameter set in the portalsettings. i created both by hands following the procedure, but all I get is
"No sites currently exist for this installation. - 503 Service Unavailable"

I have advanced URL settigns enabled and I can access the correct tabid using the /tabid=, etc. The 404 page is for public view and all should be fine. Of course, cleared cache and restarted.

The only 'good sign" is that the event log display a message with Log Type "HTTP Error Code 404 Page Not Found ". Unfortunately the front end gives a 503.

Is there any particular setting at IIS level that would prevent all my sites to display the 404 page?

Franco

I suggest not using blank template, it used to have issues and you are missing important pages like user profile and error pages.

Default template now consists of a single content page Home, you may easily adopt to your needs.

Hi Sebastian,
I have then added a new portal using the default template, which has then created the 404 page. However, no AUM in portalsettings table, even after having set the relevant parameter in admin site settings and also nothing after having added the X3.DnnUrlManagement module. I then added the parameter manually in the portalsettings table. Same behaviour, 404 logged in the event log, but 503 for the visitor.
As this is common to all my sites, would it be possible that the error is intercepted by IIS before DNN can manage it?

DNN may only catch the errors for requests, IIS is forwarding to it. you might use fiddler or network tab of Developer tools in your browser to analyse the traffic from client side
