I struggled with setting up DNN8 over the weekend.  I tried to follow the tutorial by Chris Hammond on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOoQJDeTlJ0, but it doesn't work with iis express.  I finally got it to work this morning. Here is how I did it.  Hopefully this will help other developers.

Install Instructions:

  1. Download the install.zip and extract to a location on your computer.  I extracted to c:\websites\dnndev
  2. Open SSMS. Create the database and add a user to the database
  3. Open Visual Studio. Then Open website c:\websites\dnndev
  4. Once website is open, right click Default.aspx and select "View in Browser".  I used chrome.
  5. Enter the website and database info on the install wizard page.
  6. It should finish in about 3 minutes.

- Notes-

take note of the url that is created.  For example, mine was localhost:53746.  this is the url you will use for module development.  you can then add that url to iis express.

Hopefully this will save other developers the time of having to learn this from scratch.

I wanted to follow up on this thread.  I've been using iis express for all of my local development, but then I found out that iis is shipped with Windows 7 and above.  You just need to enable iis and then follow Chris Hammonds install instructions.

Here is a good article I found on enabling iis:  http://www.howtogeek.com/112455/how-to-install-iis-8-on-windows-8/

You might encounter a 500.19 error after enabling iis.  If you receive this error, you will need  to enable asp.net components. Here is a good article for that. https://www.iis.net/configreference/system.webserver/asp/complus
