I have upgraded my DNN installation using the latest upgrade pack and after the upgrade I get a server 500 error. I also tried using a backup copy of my web.config but this did not help.

In the Windows Event  Log there is only one entry:

Event code: 4005 

Event message: Forms authentication failed for the request. Reason: The ticket supplied was invalid. 


 

What can I do to fix this or to find some more clues on what is going wrong?

Thomas,

restoring only the web.config does not help - please restore the whole 7.1.2 installation (database and files) to get back a working installation.

Make sure you don't use modules that are incompatible wth DNN 8. There were some breaking changes, so please test everything before you apply the upgrade in a production environment (best way to test is to use a local copy of your site and database).

Before applying the upgrade, make sure that you unlocked the zip file, and I would also recommend to stop the application pool before unzipping. Then start the app pool and apply the upgrade. Check the DNN log files for any errors after the update.

I have tried the following:
- I restored the whole 7.1.2 installation and confirmed it was working
- I deleted all the extensions that had updates, but weren't used. All the other extensions were up to date
- I stopped the application pool, started it again
- I unzipped the 7.4.2 upgrade
- I started http://localhost
- the upgrade process finished without errors
- when I started the site I got the 500 Server error again, but there are no entries in the Event Log

Any ideas?

  • All the extensions are up to date
  • I have stopped the application pool and started it again
  • Then I unzipped the 7.4.2 upgrade version 
  • I started the application and the upgrade process started. This process finished without errors in the log.
  • When I started http://localhost/ I got the Server 500 error without any errors in the Event Log

Any ideas?
