about 1:30 this afternoon, suddenly no one can access our site.  The CPU usage is through the roof.  appears to be the wpw3.exe.  The only way to get the cpu usage down is to turn off the DNN app pool.  not really acceptable since that is our whole website.

Anyone?  Help!!!!!!!!!  We are running 4.0.2 on windows 2003 server, iis 6, sql server 2005.  Site has been up and running fine previous to this.

Have you added or upgraded any new modules lately?

YOu could also upgrade to 4.0.3 and see if there is any impact.

Try temporarily deleting suspect DLL's from the bin -- like from modules you installed recently. This happened to me with an ActiveModules module -- the top posts I believe. I just deleted each dll one by one to find this. It turned out ActiveModules knew about the porblem, didn't tell anyone, but released a fix and it was ok after that.

On a similar note, this just happened again to me after upgrading my catalook. I'm about to go thru the same process. Catalook says it can't be their modules though. I'm running DNN 4.00.03. Luckily it's not a live site yet.

I haven't added a new module since mid June... at least two weeks ago if not more.  Could a problem like this crop up later or would it happen right away?  The only two third party modules I have are Smart Thinker Events and Form Master 1.5.

Also, at this point, should i upgrade to 4.0.3 or just go to RC 4.3.1?

Yes, with ActiveForums Top Posts, that one cropped up serveral months after use. Since you only have 2 modules, it will be easy to remove those DLL's from the bin and test if it's those modules.

I can't really advise you to use RC 4.3.1, because it's so radically different. Some mod devs are actually making 4 versions of their modules to be compat with 3.X/4.X and 3.3/4.3. I'm even having trouble releasing my new skin packs due to new hardcoded design elements in the admin (can I say grrrr here?).

Make sure those 3rd party modules are compat with whatever version you use.
