The SMTP server delivers mail correctly to addresses on the local server but there are log failures of mail sent to remote addresses with the message of:

The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: SMTP authentication is required.

I have written code to send mail and it does send off node.  The test SMTP connection on the Site Settings works fine and I use the same settings in my code successfully to send off node mail.

Does DNN use a secure connection for remote mail or is there some other setup required?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions for getting remote mail to process.

there are known issues with Site SMTP settings in various versions of DNN - I would try host SMTP settings instead.

Thanks, as always, Sebastian. I changed to use the Host rather that Portal settings and the problem persists.

I tested by using the Register new victim option. The Host email account which is a 'local' email address to the site received the email but the same error occurred to the remote address for the test victim. I then tried registering using a 'local' address for the victim and no error occurred.

I am guessing this might be some sort of SMTP security or relay issue so I will try to broach the so called support creatures at the ISP. They, of course, bail out as soon as you mention you are using anything not totally 'standard.'

Any other ideas or suggestions are always welcomed!!
