I have been given a copy of a DNN site from my client and he has asked me to test it locally then move it to another hosting provider (current provider is not very service oriented, if you get my drift).  I have the site and db.  I have restored the db and put the site into IIS locally and set the App Pool.   First run through a database connection error message.  I got that worked out and not I get an error that says nothing.  Literally says "DNN Error" and a button to "return to site", that's it.  How do you debug something like this?  And what am I missing?  I have added localhost to the PortalAlias table.

Egregious bump, but I can't believe no one has experienced this. Very poor error message.

I'd start in the system eventlog and the database's event logging table(s).

Best wishes,

The DNN database error and event tables are loaded with errors, most already there before passed to me. The only error that seems to be related just logs the page url and says the portalid is -1. There is no portal alias with that id or portal with that id. This shows me that the app is connecting to the database and can read/write.

Have you changed the Url in the table PortalAlias to your local installation?

Happy DNNing!
