Hello,

I am trying to install DNN 9 on my local machine, but using a remote SQL server.

Things done so far

1. Unzipped the DNN 9 install package to a local folder (Websites\dnndev.me)

2. Created a website in my local IIS.

3. Added iis apppool\dnndev.me in the folder structure and given it Read & Execute, List, Read and Write privileges.

4. Created a database in the remote SQL Server.

5. Modified the web.config file to set the SQL Server connection details

When I browse to http://dnndev.me, I am redirected to the default IIS homepage, but the install does not kick off.

So, I then tried entering the full URL for the install wizard - it seemed to do something but then gave me this error

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rajesh

Hello all,

Surprised that I have not had a response about this yet?
Usually I have received a much prompt response for other issues I have raised in the past. Can't believe I am the only one to encounter this! or am I ?
Is it pointing to something very fundamentally wrong in the environment I am trying to install this? I can't imagine that would be the case as I am trying to do this on a Windows 10 machine, running IIS locally and accessing a remote SQL Server 2012 DB.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hi RajeshV, I don't know why we are not getting any experts to help us on these forums. I am trying to find out info about installing DNN 9 as well, but havent had a response :(

I did find a solution to the problem you mentioned, on this page:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/9...

Since I an using Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8.5, I tried answer #149, and was able to successfully get past this particular error.

I copied the text below. On the page itself you will see a screen shot of the Add Roles and Features wizard. If you are using a different server /IIS version, you might find a different solution on the page.

I hope this helps

Tom

For Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8, the procedure is similar.
The Web Server (IIS) and Application Server should be installed, and you should also have the optional Web Server (IIS) Support under Application Server.
Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8 Requirements for MVC
Just to clarify, the "Web Server (IIS) Support" feature checkbox is not under the 'Application Server' node in the pic above. It will show after you perform several 'next' and pass the Server Roles and Features on the left nav bar and get to 'Role Services' (doesn't appear in the pic above but will appear for you after several 'next'). This drove me crazy :P – thedrs Jun 10 '14 at 16:57

This was done using Add Roles and Features Wizard

Typically, when setting up a local dev environment I skip using AppPool Identity.  It is way too much hassle for my local machine.  I am not worried about hackers breaking into websites running on my laptop.  As a result, I run all of my local sites in a single AppPool that I setup with the NetworkService account.  This means that I don't have to give folders special permissions as the NetworkService account already is a member of the Users group.

Thanks for the information. I'm doing this on a shared web server in our organization, so I believe knowing about the Application Pool permissions setup is important for me.

Thanks again
