I would like recommendations for how to secure DNN where the site will be exposed to the web.

What I have done with other solutions is use a web server in the DMZ, an application server behind the firewall, and a database server behind the firewall.  Then I only have to open the port to the internal application server on the firewall.  All connections to the database and other internal resources are done by the application server limiting exposure to this data from the web.  Does DNN have this ability?

 

If not, then I suppose my option is to open a port in the firewall to the internal SQL server for the web server in the DMZ.  This exposes the SQL server directly through the firewall though so I would like to know recommendations on securing this properly or other configurations you would recommend for this.  My SQL server will store HR data during the employee onboarding process so it is imperative that it is as secure as it can possibly be.
