It's pretty straightforward.  Going from 8 to 9 has been smooth for us, the hard part is going from 7 to 8.  DNN 8 breaks a lot of old modules, and gets rid of SolPartMenu which breaks most old skins.  If you want to change your skin/theme, better to do it under 7 before you upgrade.  Check any core modules you are using to see if they have been deprecated, though most have new versions on GitHub that were fixed for DNN 8.

what about the modules that have to be upgraded to work in the new environment?  do i upgrade to the new modules before the dnn 9.2 upgrade or after.  this is a catch 22 because the skin and modules will not work in 9.2 but the new versions of the modules do not work prior to 8.0+

so im confused as to the order of events

Rod and Michael,

you can upgrade the modules during the upgrading the installation. Just copy the install packages of the modules (skins, providers...) in the apprpriate folder in the install directory _before_ you start the upgrade of the site - and they will be installed automatically.
