I tried running the DotNetNuke 4.3.2 Starter Kit  using Visual C# 2005 Express and got this error:

Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not
exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of VisualStudio.
This also happens for the DotNetNuke 4.0.3 Starter Kit.

Any help is appreciated.

  1. I tried to reset the import/export settings of Visual Studio Express for C# and then re-run the StarterKit, but that failed with the same error message.
  2. I created C:\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\Visual Web Developer\"  manually... I'm assuming the author of that post meant "templates" not "teamplates" as he wrote. Anyway, after making the directory, it still did not work, failing with the same error.
  3. I dont know how to try the option of manually moving the source somewhere. Obviously, I would need the source instead of the starter kit, but I have no idea of where to put it.

More searching indicates that I need the full version of Visual Studio to use DNN? Is that correct? I just have the Express version.

I am pretty sure you can get up and running with DNN for free just fine using Visual Studio Express and SQL Server 2005 Express.
