Hello everyone, I have been handed down the source code of a preexisitng dnn website. I have both the src for the modules and the skins but I'm not sure how to set it up locally for development and testing. Do I need anything else to set it up or am I missing something?

Pablo,

Welcome to the DNN Community, we're happy to have you!

I previously wrote a blog series about installing DNN which you can find here: Installing DNN. The process would be similar for you. Though, instead of using the install file zip you would use the source files that you have.

Just ensure the database in your web.config connection string is the correct one you are using to test on and make sure your IIS is configured correctly and you should be good to go. (I also wrote a blog on IIS Gotchas when installing DNN that may be helpful).

Hope this helps...

Depending on who originally handled/built the website and how experienced they were in doing so, you could have any number of issues. Be sure to create a forum or Q&A post for any specific you have. We're all here to help. :)

If the website is currently running, your best approach would be to make a copy of the website and then install it on a development server.

Once you have a copy of the live/production site running on a development server, you can start learning your way around DNN.

Perhaps the next step would be to get it upgraded to DNN 8.0.4. Later you can upgrade to DNN 9.x.

As for the "source" code, disabuse yourself of the notion that you should start recompiling DNN and modules. You don't need to compile DNN and you should have installable versions of the modules. Not having those is a clear indication that there are going to be obstacles in your future.

----------

But, before you do all of that, you should get familiar with DNN. A great way to do that is by installing a clean version of DNN on your development server. Then, you can learn about DNN. Then you can deal with the task of installing a copy of the live site on your development server. Then. Then. Then. Then there will lots of other things to learn. And, as Clint and Will have suggested, ask whenever you have confusion or a question. We're a friendly community and will do our best to help you.

Welcome to the great DNN community!

You can use nvQuickSite to setup a local DNN instance for testing and getting a feel for how a "clean" install of the matching version of DNN works.  This would be a good first step and would allow you to "kick the tires" without the fear of messing something up.  Just be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements documented on the nvQuickSite website.
