I am installing DNN on Windows Server 2016 with MS SQL Server Web running on Amazon's AWS platform. I have the website loaded and the database created using the instruction in the installation Wiki. I'm using the Integrated Security method.

When I run the install using the . as the server name (tried (local)) I get the following error:

"Unable to connect to database"

ERROR:Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 18456
Message: Sql login failed

I've tested the connection on the server using test.udl with the same credentials and it works.

I'm so frustrated.

I've found the logs and I see I get the following error:

Logon,Unknown,Login failed for user 'IIS APPPOOL\DefaultAppPool'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

How do I rectify that?

I got the website to work (well sort of)

I had to add the user IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool but you must not check if it exists. Just add it... once it has been added and given the correct DB access db_owner, the installation process should start.

There was no information about this in the Install Wiki. I managed to trace the problem by looking in the SQL logs

it is a glitch in SQL Server Management Studio, that validation of the app pool users does not work.
