Hi, I have an existing non-DNN website, let's call it www.mysite.com. I want to rebuild it using DNN, but I want to leave the existing site up until I am done with the DNN version, and THEN point www.mysite.com at my DNN host and use a Portal alias to make www.mysite.com go to my new DNN site, so there is no interruption of service.

How can I build the new Portal first, and then point the domain at it later?

Thanks in advance!

You can setup DNN at another address, say beta.mysite.com and configure it as needed. You can even do it on your dev machine at localhost. Just ensure that your connection string is pointing to what will be the live db. Add what will be the final address as a portal alias during the configuration.

When you are ready, copy over the entire web folder contents to the folder where IIS expects to find your site or alternately, re-configure IIS to point to the web folder you used to configure the site (assuming you stage on the same server). The only gotcha is that some modules may store the absolute path for hyperlinks in content. You can mitigate this either by checking for and replacing such content directly in the database, or pointing the FQDN you used for staging to the production site in DNS (of course, this is only possible if the FQDN is not a private address such as localhost).

I have done this successfully a number of times using www2.site.com for a www.site.com and not had a problem.

Yes, definitely - this is kind of a hosting question - you would just install DNN and configure it, and add the domain name to the portal aliases at the last moment and then change your domain name DNS servers to point at the Name Servers pointing to your website.

There are at least 2 steps here - installing and configuring your new website, and then changing everything to point to it for pulic access...

Thanks - I am not hosting my own stuff however. I have a DNN setup at webhost4life, which btw, has been an awesome company so far, with instant answers through live chat that used to take 1and1 (my old hosting company) days to answer - incorrectly!

Anyway, I don't have control over my IIS, so I think the second reply was more for my situation. rodneyjoyce, when you say "just install DNN and configure it, and add the domain name to the portal aliases at the last moment", do you mean set up the website as the main Portal, and then add the desired domain name as an alias to that Portal? If so, I have two questions:

1. Will that affect links that I made within the site? I wouldn't think so...

2. Can I do the same thing, but instead of using my first Portal, use any other Portal and then just add the real domain name later?

Thanks

Hmmm - glad you like WH4L - not a fan, but it did suit my needs for a while ;)

In the WH4L control panel they give you a temp URL to use (Site68.xyz... ) etc. Add this to your Portal Aliases and use this to admin your site.

1) No - just don't hardcode any domains into your links if referencing pages internally, and don't give out the temp address. If you need to give out the URL then wait until the new site is running.

2) Yes, you can make as many portals as you like under that portal - tying up the domain name with one of them as a portal alias is the last step...
