OK I see I need to get educated in the new model! Up until this week I have resolutely avoided stepping out of what I know - DNN 3.x and VS 2003/ASP.NET 1.1 but now 4.3.3 is out I thought I ought to get up to date. A few more questions:

So even though all the compiled DotNetNuke.xxxxx DLLs are in the /bin folder, ASP.NET 2.0 still needs the source files? What is the purpose of the DLLs if the codebehind files are compiled at runtime?

Is it impossible (without WAP) to distribute an ASP.NET 2.0 project without the source files? Are all the DNN developers who produce PA versions of their modules for DNN 4.x still using VS 2003?

Is there any difference between the DNN 4.x Install package and Source package?

Thanks and sorry if all of these questions have been answered in other threads months ago!

Shaun's done a good blog about it here.  It's not impossible to distribute an ASP.NET project without source - the web deployment project and WAP addons both allow for no-source-code deployments.  It's not so much that asp.net 2 *needs* the code files - it's just a new option (which unfortuneately they initially decided to force upon us in Visual Studio 2005, until the new bits became available).

FYI:  I am working on a project at the moment that targets DNN 4 - and I'm developing modules using WAP, and it works fine.  The chief concern with WAP (as I understand it) is that it's only available for Visual studio - not for the free tools - Shaun mentions this in his blog, too.

Something weird is going on here - in my brain at least.

BUT... Why I CAN'T find code-behind files in the source version?
