I'm pretty close to giving up, with DNN and these forums forever. I am trying to get 3.3.3 or 3.3.4 installed on a 2k3 server. This server has no other installations on it. It is configured like this:

.net 1.1 and 2.0 installed.
Install/portal directory is on a D: drive
The site is setup in IIS as it's own website (not under Default Website)
object qualifier "dnn_" has been added in the web.config

YES - Network Service has full control of the directory. YES - I read the installation instructions.

The installation goes smoothly until the end, when I believe it is trying to create portal 0. All  the db objects appear to have been created.

I got a similar error when I didn't have the version and app pool set correctly in IIS.  I wasn't installing though, I was moving the site to another virtual directory and website in IIS and forgot to change those settings.  Good luck.

Regarding the object reference type errors, I sometimes get these with regular ASP.NET web applications on the first try of a web page.  So, my first step is probably would you've already done, try reinstalling.  However, based on some other advice, that pretty much means you should remove the database, create a new one, then, try reinstalling.

I haven't used the object qualifier dnn_, like you did, so, try installing without qualifying the names.

Can you enable trace for that web site and see if the web page offers any more information.  You'll need to go to IIS Manager, select the web site, click the Configure ? button, go to Application Mappings, add .axd, allow verbs GET, POST, and HEAD (I think) and select the right aspnet_isapi.dll for the version you're using.

Then, go to the web.config for the dnn site and add the trace node and attributes:

    <!--  APPLICATION-LEVEL TRACE LOGGING
          Application-level tracing enables trace log output for every page within an application.
          Set trace enabled="true" to enable application trace logging.  If pageOutput="true", the
          trace information will be displayed at the bottom of each page.  Otherwise, you can view the
          application trace log by browsing the "trace.axd" page from your web application
          root.
    -->
    <trace enabled="true" requestLimit="10" pageOutput="true" traceMode="SortByTime" localOnly="false" />

Also, do you get any errors in the event log?

Thank you both for the suggestions. I think I narrowed the cause of the problem down to the directory that it is installing into. If I install into the c drive, it works. But when I use that driveshare, it craps out because I don't think the network service rights are being propagated. It seems like it can't create the directory for portal 0. In the folder permissions, Network service is set correctly, but it seems to "lose" the authority during the installation. If I find out anything further, I'll post.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help and I'll check out those tricks too.

if you're installing onto a network share, your problem is that asp.net does not have sufficent permissions for it (it's not enough to simply grant file permissions access, as the .net framework requires access). You can either use the framework configuration tool in your administrative tools ir use caspol http://blogs.msdn.com/shawnfa/archive/2004/12/30/344554.aspx to grant full trust.
