When I download the starter kit 4.3 I get a zip file instead of a vsi file. The download says it will download a vsi file but I get a zip file. The content looks very much like what's in a Source download.

it should be a .vsi, for some reason from time to time the download seems to be served by sourceforge as a .zip (probably one of the download partners has incorrectly named the file). Just rename it to .vsi, as you need to double-click to install it in vs.net, and thats the expected extension.

I have this problem on a machine with only Visual Web developer installed

A problem occured while running the installer. Please contact the content author for problems with the content.

Error message:
String cannot have zero length.

however I don't have in on a machine where Visual Studio 2005 is installed.

Any ideas why ?

I'm not sure, I've only seen that issue twice before, and in each case the problem was using a beta version of visual web developer - can you make sure you're using the right version. The problem seemed to be a missing folder that the beta hadn't created in the right location, perhaps you could check and see if you have the correct folders (if you don't have one or more of these try creating them and rerunning the starterkit)
