Hi,

I have a portal that I built and have been hosting in my web space for the past year.  Due to it's size, I've convinced the organization to purchase their own web space and have a stand-alone portal.  How can I export this portal out of one installation and import it into a different installation?  I really don't want to have to setup all of this up manually again.

Thanks!

Ian

you need host access to export your portal as a template, but please notice, that not all modules support export/import and might get lost. The more secure way would asking you host to create a clone of the installation and delete all other portals from it.

Hi Ian,

You can use the "export template" function on the hosts/portals page to create a template package you can move to the portals/default directory on new server.  Then on the new server use the Wizard function to use the template as the basis for your new site.

Some modules don't export their data, so you will have to either enter all the data by hand or bug the developer for a version that supports import/export.

Before you run the import, make sure to have all the modules you've used on your old site installed on the new server, DNN won't know what to do with data for an uninstalled module.  Also don't try to move from DNN 3 to DNN 4, I'm not sure that upgrading versions is supported during import.

You can also, just back up your DB and DNN directories and move them to the new server.  This requires some SQL server knowhow, but, it also works well and may be the only way to do it if you have a lot of modules that lack import/export support.

Have fun,

GregC

I've exported the template.  How do I import it into the destination site?  Also, I'm going from a 3.2.2 to a 4.3.4 DNN install.  Does this cause a problem?  Because of this, I can't just copy over the entire original portal since part of my objective to upgrade the site to 4.3.4.

Thanks!

Ian

You could also copy the live database and file system locally.

Delete any portals and content that you do not want.

Then move the modified database and file system to a new host.

I move versions of my production database to my local development server for testing changes all the time. Once I had to restore a locally modified version to my production host as a last case back up, when the production version was corrupted.

Good luck.
