We are continually told to give database access to ASPNET (Windows XP) or NETWORK USER (windows 2003).

However if you are using Windows XP pro 64-bit and you give ASPNET access to the database you will probably still get: Login Failed for User NT Authority\Network service. This is because XP Pro 64-bit also has the Network Service user.

If you can't find it, it is part of the IIS_WPG group, so give it access to your database.

Yes, (machinename)\ASPNET is the default ASP.NET user for XP and Windows 2000.  One suggested MS configuration is to match the passwords on the web server and the database for ASPNET and give rights to the database servers local (machinename)\ASPNET to the database.

In Windows 2003, NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE is the default identity for the defaul application pool for IIS 6.  If you create your own local account or domain-authenticated account for an application pool, you will need to add it to the IIS_WPG group.  MS has more details and various other possible configurations in MSDN...
