I wonder if anyone can help me out here. My company has tasked me with skinning my DNN site so that it will work on a Pocket PC based on Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 2003. The trouble is that whenever I inject the menu as a skin object, it doesn't appear on the browser.

It doesn't seem to matter which menu I inject either. I have tried [TREEVIEW], [SOLPARTMENU], and [INVSIDEMENU]. I even made sure I was using the updated verions of the modules. I am working in a 3.3.4 DNN environment using SQL Server 2005. Although I am reletively new to skinning DNN, I have had good success skinning with the HTM, CSS, and XML files that DNN uses for parsing skins and can generally do whatever I need to do as far as adding functionaliity and styling the menu's go.

Unfortunately, I can't understand why an injected menu does not render on a WM5 or WM2003 PPC. If I place the menu's manually they render normally, but it doesn't make sense to have two main menu's. HELP?!

TIA,

John

I once had problems that are (a little bit) similar (not DNN)
I solved them by adding some browser capabilities to the machine.config file on the webserver.
But I think this could only be a problem with .NET 1.1, not 2.0
Maybee that's a lead?

Thanks for the insight. What sort of browser capabilities should I be looking for?

Asp.net (1.1) checks what kind of browser the client is using and then changes the way it renders the page.
What kind of capabilties a specific browser has is configured in the machine.config file.
I had an old machine.config file on the server and it rendered all pages on firefox as text-only.
After adding it to machine.config it was okay.
I know you can also download updates of machine.config for mobile devices  from the Microsoft website.
Or else you might add something manually........

Just google for "machine.config browser capabilities"

But always backup your machine.config before you edit it....!

Hope this will help you.

I now see why the DNN core team decided to wait for Whidby. The 1.x way of browser detection is muttled and poorly implimented. The 2.0 Framework is not only a better architecture, but it is also much more elegant.

I went into my machine.config for both 1.1 and 2.0 and after only a few minutes, I recognized how much better the 2.0 architecture is for supporting mobile devices running the various versions of Pocket PC and so on. So much easier to update and maintain is this architecture, that even a mid level developer can add new browser definitions without much hassle.

I will now get off my soapbox and say what I intended to say:

I updated my DNN install to 4.3.4, and refinished my transparent container to more closely fit the DNN example, and viola! my skinning woes are gone. It seems that the 1.1 framework is beginning to show its age. I didn't have to update just my machine config, I needed to update my framework. Everything is looking fantastic on both my PPC running WM5 and my blackberry.

For those of you on the fence, the benifits you gain by upgrading to the 2.0 framework far outweigh the work involved in upgrading your DNN 2.x/3.x custom modules. It's really no contest IMHO.

Cheers!
