I am new to DDN, although I've heard much about it. I have a question regarding the control i will have over my portal website if i was to use DDN.

First, why do i need a DDN host? Why can't i use any regular host that supports ASP.net? Are there special requirements on the host? If i later decide to create my own modules, would they be automatically supported or would i have to ask my host to install them? What i dont understand is this all seems to be VB.net code, so why can't i just upload it like a regular ASP.net website?

Second, and i'm asking this question without having done my homework so please bare with me, will i have complete access to the source code? My portal is highly customized and has custom features (that this community would call modules) and i would need to implement them on the DNN portal if they're not already available, and thus, i would need to be able to have access to all the code. (i assume this is the case).

Thanks for your help, and hoping to help out with this wonderful project.

I'm not sure if your still looking for answers to your questions but if you are I think I can help you out.

As far as webhosts go, you can host with anyone as long as they have two major requirements - asp.net 1.1 or 2.0 and SQL Server database 2000 or 2005. There are also a number of permissions issues on the root site and subfolders that the webhost would have to help you out with.

As far as the modules go, you do all of the support from your installation. You are responsible for installing and de-installing them.

There is a lot of VB.Net code and you do upload the pre-install code by ftp like you normally would, but the nature of this portal process requires an installation to take place (also configuring your database automatically) which then is done from your browser by accessing your site via your url.

As far as source code goes, most developers install a nonsource version of dotnetnuke on the production website then install a source version (with visual studio) on their local machine for module development. All dotnetnuke installations and modules come with source code. The only ones that may not are third party developed modules and they just don't want to release it.

Alex,

you can use any host, that offers ASP.Net with a MS SQL database (2000/2005, even MSDE or Express) and enough RAM - of cource, a DNN specialist host can give better support, if there are issues.

You can download full source of DotNetNuke framework and all project modules, though you are advised to reduce core tweaks to a necessary minimum, otherwise upgrades might get a PIA.
