Hi folks,

I want to make sure that I provide my customers with the best infrastructure for their DNN sites so what are differences between DNN 3 versus DNN 4 with regard to Speed and Reliability and anything else important you can think of.  I know that they use .NET 1.1 and .NET 2 respectively but I do not know the difference.

Many thanks in advance for any help given

There is no difference except the ASP.Net framework.  But if you are starting new and have the choice then I would recommend using DNN 4.3.4, since at some point in the future enhancements will stop on the 3.x version.

Thanks John,

In your experience is .NET 2 faster and/or more stable than .NET 1.1

Thanks again

Tony

Yes, if you have the option definitely go for 4.x - a lot of module developers, including myself, are not releasing non-critical module updates in 3.x as there are 2 physical lines of code to maintain. The sooner everyone moves to the latest and greatest the better... (of course, it is not always possible)

There is a actually a little more stability in the 3.x version then the 4.x version depending on how extensive your site use is.  Things like using the FileManger, and lots of updates to content or uploading of modules will be better on 3.x because the new ASP.Net 2.0 framework and it dynamic compilation has caused a few problems with caching, etc.

These stability differences are being corrected quickly though, so 4.x would still be my recommendation unless you don't have any reservations about upgrading to the new asp.net framework later.

For performance I have not noticed any differences between the two, they are both relatively slow.
