Whilst working on my skinning application I discovered that the SkinObject TREEVIEWMENU is defined in the skinning guide but it is not defined in the list of skinobjects in DNN4.3.4

On the other hand TREEVIEW is defined in DNN4.3.4 but not even mentioned in the skinning guide, and it links to TreeViewMenu.ascx (MENU and ACTIONS are defined as being replaced by SOLPARTMENU and SOLPARTACTIONS)
Edit your Skin.xml and Container.xml files with:

I'm getting a DNN 3.2.2 upgrade to DNN 4.3.4 with a broken treeview. It's pointing to <%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" TagName="TREEVIEW" Src="~/Admin/Skins/TreeViewMenu.ascx" %> which looks right, but it still breaks and so far I can't figure out why.

Is this related?

I think that you have to look at the DotNetNuke Navigation WebControls.pdf documentation.

Don't worry, I have read it.
It clearly states that the old skinobjects have been rewriten to use the NAV functionality under the hood and still be compatible with the old skin object definitions.

TreeViewMenu.ascx inherits from NavObjectBase and initializes with "DNNTreeNavigationProvider" hardcoded.

IF you go look at your list of skinobjects in 4.3.4 you will see there is a skinobject named "TREEVIEW" wich maps to TreeViewMenu.ascx

What I am saying is, there should be a skinobject TREEVIEWMENU wich also maps to TreeViewMenu.ascx to preserve compatibelity with old skins and to be consistent with the (aging) skinning guide.

 

So in fact it really is missing
