hey this is my first time at installing DotNetNuke and i was wondering if anyone could help me?

here's my configuration:

O/S: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2
Internet App: IIS 6.0
DNN Version: 4.3.4
DNN Default Directory: C:\DotNetNuke\
.net version: 2.0
Sql: MS SQL Server 2005

ive got my website in the default location c:\inetub\wwwroot\ and i've got DNN as a virtual directory.

when i attempt to install it i get this error :

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.03.04

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

 i followed the installation guilde several times and have looked on the net for a solution but i can't seem to find one.

here's my web.config file:

You haven't configured your database connection strings in web.config!  It is done in two places.  Here's the relevant code from your web.config --- you have to uncomment the SQL Server connection strings and edit them with the correct database name, password etc:

   <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=XXX;Database=XXX;uid=XXX;pwd=XXX;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=XXX;Database=XXX;uid=XXX;pwd=XXX;"/>
    -->

This is an example from a DNN 4.3.1 web.config file...

  </configSections>
  <connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX;Database=myDBName;uid=myDBUser;pwd=mypwd;"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX;Database=myDBName;uid=myDBUser;pwd=mypwd;" />
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>
    -->
    <add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config" />
    <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" />
    <add key="InstallMemberRole" value="true" />
    <add key="ShowMissingKeys" value="false" />
    <add key="EnableWebFarmSupport" value="false" />
    <add key="EnableCachePersistence" value="false"/>
    <add key="HostHeader" value="" /><!-- Host Header to remove from URL so "www.mydomain.com/johndoe/Default.aspx" is

treated as "www.mydomain.com/Default.aspx" -->
    <add key="RemoveAngleBrackets" value="false" />
    <!--optionally strip angle brackets on public login and registration screens-->
  </appSettings>

The database name, username and password are all created by you or whoever creates the server database for use by DNN.

Also... swap the ip address of the external hosting server, with the name of your own server such as

"xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" -> "mySBS2003" if you have installed DNN on a local server.

I have this on several websites hosted externally, and several SBS2003 installations with DNN as an intranet and it runs fine.

I have left a lot of code in above so you can see where within the web.config file you will need to navigate to...

Hope that helps you.

Cheers.
