Hello,

I'm working on an SMS module for DotNetNuke which allows users to send SMS. It's still at a very early stage (I haven't written any code yet)
I plan to make it flexible enough to use as many as possible SMS Gateways and a variety of protocols.
The module could be used for purposes like:
- enable registered users to send SMS
- send SMS to user groups (latest news, special offers, etc.)

I have several features in mind, but I'd like to hear if anybody has any feature to suggest, in order to help me creating a useful module, usable in several context and for different purposes.

I don't have plan for licensing model at this moment, but I think it will be sold on snowcovered when ready. Anyway, during the development I'll probably need beta testers, which of course will have the first release for free :) Again, I don't have plans yet, so I don't know how many, when I will release the module, and so on.

Thanks for any help
Antonio

I've got lots of experience working with GSM gateways, both in reseaving and sending SMS/MMS messages. I never worked with american networks, only with european GSM networks

features you would need to suport:

  • given a list of available gateways, and a global telephone number, calculate the cheapest gateway to reach that number (requires cost info for every gateway)
  • dynamically map SMS output object to gateway output (HTTP POST / HTTP GET / XML RPC) (so you do not need to write a provider for every gateway)
  • support MMS (at least sending JPEG pictures, wav-mp3-avi-mpeg would be cool too,  at most every known mimetype)
  • Complete logging, to make statistics
  • The GUI is not that important, as most projects will need a custom GUI, your BLL and DAL code is much more important, so design it with flexibility in mind. Offcoarse you should have some GUI modules installed with BLL and DAL. (this enables automation)

If you can build all this, you got yourselve a client here

Up to now I've always writen custom solutions and unfortunatly I can't disclose any source or company names.

Thank you very much for your suggestions.
Some of them are already planned, other aren't.

This is the list of features I'd like to implement (copy&pasted from the document I'm writing):

Send SMS

·        to a specific mobile number

·        to a list of mobile numbers

·        to one or more user groups

·        auto split for messages longer than 160 characters

Recipients

·        raw mobile number

·        DNN user

·        DNN user group

SMS features

·        Flash SMS

·        Deferred delivery

Administration

·        Allow specific user group to send SMS

·        For each group

Þ        set the maximum number of SMS on a time interval basis

Þ        allow/disallow cross-country messages

·        Ability to override limit for a each single user

·        Choice of the SMS Gateway to use

·        Ability to use more than 1 SMS gateway, with less cost routing on a recipient basis

·        Max number of characters allowed (dependent from the SMS gateway, if providing less than the default 160 characters)

·        Maximum number of characters allowed for users

·        Prefix or Postfix custom message added to each message

Notifications

For each SMS:

·        log on database

·        notification by email

·        online report (history)

For multiple send:

·        log on database

·        notification by email

·        online summery report, with number of successful send and failures

User requirements

·        dynamic counter showing the number of used / available characters

The MMS idea is good, but I think that I will plan it for a next release.
