It seems that even though my forums are unmoderated, I have to give Trusted user access to all of my users so they can edit their own posts. If unmoderated, shouldn't it show the Edit button for everyone who can post? So, to work around this limitation I'm going to have to set my users to trusted. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear I can set a user role as trusted, I must wait for each user to enter the forums and then later edit them individually to set them as Trusted.

Is there a way around these issues that I am missing? Thanks.

There is no way around this for the time being. At this time, while I am overhauling permissions, I am not sure of the best approach here. I am not sure if I want to get into a trusted role as this is kind of against the principle around the trusted variables purpose. I also am not sure how I feel about allowing people to edit in unmoderated forums yet. These are things I have to think through still.

The ability to Edit your own posts in a forum that is unmoderated seems natural. If I can post the original content without someone approving it, why shouldn't I be able to fix a typo in it? It's important to remember that there are many other forum solutions out there that are more mature. You should consider what the others are doing before you make decisions that impact usability. As I needed to get up and running quickly, I bought Active Forums. Their solution doesn't have the edit limitation and the avatars work.

While I understand frustrations, I do ask that we not tell me how I should develop. I am all for critque of things but to tell me how to approach something is a bit much. FYI, I do use other forum applications outside of DotNetNuke and have avoided using Active Forums as an admin or seeing the code to avoid a potential conflict of interest. That said, I am glad you are happy with Active Forums, you have a support channel and someone who is fully dedicated to their project. I am not saying I am not dedicated to this project, but lets face the fact that I cannot spend the amount of time on it that Will spends on his.

Crispy,

With all due respect to all the effort you have put into this forum, I think tgurath has a valid point.   Don't you think it should be up to the forum owner if users can edit their own posts?  Why not make it an option?  There are many, many forums out there that are not as locked down as the kind you seem to invision.

I currently run a forum on another (outdated) platform - it's wide open.  Users can create accounts and post away without any form of moderation, including editing their own posts after the fact.  It works great and allows for a rapidly changing community.

However, the platform is old and limited, and I'm looking around for a new one.  I'm drawn to DNN because of all it has to offer.  But, I'm anxiously awating the next release of the Forum module to see if it will work in this kind of 'open' environment.  The ability for someone to edit their own posts w/o moderation is a must.  Please give it serious consideration.
