The forums don't send mail any different then other parts of DotNetNuke. This module uses the same SendMail function used from registration. The difference here can be the sending from address. SMTP servers will not always allow certain addresses to be the from, because they appear to be spam.

that is exactly my question: what are the DIFFERENCES in how the forums send mail?  do the other functions/modules/etc use the account in the host settings as the 'from' address?  does the forums module use something else?  like the poster's email address?  this is the type of detail i'm looking for.

even if you told me that forums uses the email in the forum settings under automated address (which i outlined above), i'd ask 'how is it using it, and is that the same as how the newsletter / other things is using it?'  because the account there is configured to be exactly the same as the account under host smtp settings.

there is obviously *some* difference between how the module uses SendMail, and that's what i'm trying to identify right now.

The only difference is the SendMail in the forums is passed either the user who posted's email address OR the email address set in the General Settings. The core itself in things like registration has the Admin's email address as the from. The other difference, which is obvious, is whom is receiving the mail. The send mail function is passed one user at at time which is built based on forum subscriptions. If one of your users don't have an email address or that email address is invalid, it can also cause issues. For example, if host is subscribed (which you should never use as a user w/ this module) it is possible you have host as the email address which doesn't adhere to the x@x.com format. This will also be blocked by smtp servers.

yes, so based on this if both the email address of the user who's posted AND the email address listed in the general settings are THE SAME as the admin's email address, and if the person RECEIVING the email is set to be the same as someone receiving a group change or a newsletter, then there's no reason that i can see that this shouldn't be working, yet here i am with still no working notifications.  :(

i'm now almost resigned to either make the decision to turn off notifications, use another forum module, or try and debug the core forum module code myself...

Just to make sure we are clear, the current module will only send to a single email address once per notification. This means if 5 users have the same email, only one notification will be sent. On the other side of things, If you are posting the message, you will also not get the email as this is by design.

yes.  we're clear.  i cannot get the module to send ANY email addresses, even if it is just ONE single user who has chosen notification.
