If you are just trying to do load balancing then you can use the same hostname. But if it is on the same machine then you won't gain much from that.

If you want to get a seperate application space for doing updates then you will either need seperate hostnames or use the IP address directly.

I have them in different app pools on the production server now. I have added an extra Host A record and created the two sites in IIS. Unfortunetly I cannot set TTL on those records any lower then 86400 so I have to talk to the Unix guys to change that for me to 60 seconds.

Unless you are monitoring the different IP addresses and modifing DNS dynamically to switch if one goes down you should not need a TTL that low.  Putting it that low will really increase the load on your DNS Server.

This is a way to do fail-over, not load balancing.  These two are often grouped together but they are not the same thing.

If you are looking for high availability using Round-Robin DNS with automatic fail-over and load balancing, I recommend TZO.

They host your DNS on a geographically distributed network and monitor your IP addresses, then switch your DNS responses automatically if one or more is not available.

Thanks. I have it setup now with two different IP addresses for www.smallbizserver.net in DNS. I run the two instances in IIS on those different IP addresses and two different app pools. I can see in my logs that both sites are used.
