What's up all,
Newb here...I just installed DNN 4.x yesterday and am playing around with it...Created skins and containers just fine...But now I want to create a new portal(just for playing around).

So I am keeping the original that I created http://servername/dotnetnuke and want to create a new parent portal http://servername/portal2 (using "servername/portal2" as the alias)

I go through the "Create Portals" just fine and it gets created in the db, but when I try and go to the URL: http://servername/portal2 all I get is a 404 error.

I have tried this a couple of times (thinking maybe I screwed up the first time), but still nothing on my second try.  Which kind of brings me to my other question...How do I delete portals?  I can't seem to find that anywhere.

Thanks very much in advance!

you will need to create a second virtual directory pointing to yout DotNetNuke directory and don't forget to set default.aspx as default file.

Thanks!!
Do you mean create the new VD, and just point it at the "website" folder?  Same folder as the original portal(OTB)?  WHere do I set the default file?  Do you mean within the VD properties, making sure that default.aspx is in the "Documents" tab?  If so, then it is already there on Window Server 2003 (which is what I am using).

How do I delete my other tries to create a portal?

Thanks again!!!
Gary

If I understand your main question, you shouldn't need to create another VD.  You should be able to point the second site at the original portal's VD.  At that point DNN uses the HTTP Alias to find the correct portal to send along the request.  HTH.

Were you ever able to delete your unused portals?  I attemtped to delete one of mine, and it appears to not have worked.  I still see the "deleted" portal in the Portal List.

Hi atmchuck,
Not sure if I understand what you are saying.
I created the first (original) the exact way they said to install it.
I then created a second parent portal from with in the Host menu.  alias "servername/portal2"

But that didn't seem to work...kept getting a 404, like DNN couldn't find the site.

So, using the replies from this post, I created a "portal2" VD within IIS and pointed it to the "website" directory of the DNN install.  Then it seem to work fine.

If this is NOT the way that I am supposed configure a second portal, please let me know...I am about to install DNN on my production server and would like to configure it the correctly right from the start.

Also, I just thought about this...On my production box, when I create the portals, should I use the actual external URL as the alias?

Meaning, currently on my dev server I have the portal aliases set to "servername/portal1" and "servername/portal2".

But of course I would like, on production box, the portals to use the real URL: http://www.portal1.com and http://www.portal2.com when users go to it.  Should I set the portal alias, on the production box, to the real URLs instead of servernam/portal1 and servername/portal2?

Or do I set it up just like I did in dev and use "host headers" for the URL definitioins?

Thanks very much in advance!!
