Here are my comments. I've looked at all the DNN forum modules I could. The one I liked the most is the core forums module. However, there are things that I could not get working that were very important to my users. So I purchased Active Forums.

For free you cannot go wrong with the Core Forums Module. One good thing is that it looks like the module has a lot of attention right now. So I expect to see things get better.

Well, if you're looking for a free Forum module besides this one, there are 3 other modules available (according to my knowledge)

1. YetAnotherForum.Net (YAF) : Almost the same as PHP-bb but its integration with DNN is not so tight, still having some bugs with security and the setup progress requires modification of web.config | However, this is a good choice for those who want a quick and easy-to-use Forum module.

2. DNNBB : An absolutely Free, simple and clean Forum with not so much complicated feature.

3. PTForum : Pretty good Forum module. More feature than DNNBB but less than YAF. However, you need to pay 20$/yr to get all of its feature (including RSS Feed, Aggregated RSS Feed, hide the copyright and Souce code)

I've tried all of them and the core Forum is really the best choice. It looks good, highly customizable and has various feature.

Best regards,

Duc

I used YAF before this project, I had too many issues w/ the integration but it does look good.

I never used DNNBB.

PTForum seems to me an obvious hybrid of this and Active Forums.

It turns out that some people are picky about the appearance and functionality of their forum/posts/smileys/avatars/attachments.

I have installations of both ActiveForums and Presstopia's PT Forum, and I consider them both to be better than the core forum module.

Not being a programmer,  I cannot appreciate the subtleties that Crispy refers to with regard to the manner in which the core forum module is written, or adheres to the DNN best practice, or whatnot.

My experience is that most users are picky about the forums they use. For a long time I ran on phpbb with a highly customized site. Then the site was attacked, had to rebuild (thankfully did not lose anything) and I just didn't feel like going through all of the customizations I had made to MX Portal and phpbb. Too much work. Users complained because they lost certain features they really liked. There was no way I could make the move to a new forum setup and not have avatars working correctly. Yes they are very picky.
