You indicated that you have XPPro. With XPPro you can install the IIS web server and try this method:

* This uses SQL Express. you must download and install it first and reboot your computer for this to work.

Create a directory on your hard drive. Do not put it under the wwwroot directory because it will most likely have permissions set that will make the installation difficult.
Unzip the files to the directory

In IIS configuration, create a new Virtual Directory.

Click Next
Give the site a name
Point to the root of the directory
On this screen check the boxes next to "Read", "Run scripts (such as ASP)", and "Execute". Then click Next.
In IIS, go into properties for the site you just created and click on the ASP.NET tab and insure that you set the site to run under ASP.NET 2.0.

Go to the site in your web browser
The site sets up using the default settings that are set to use SQL Server Express

Geert mentioned removing some of the modules when you install to make the installation move faster and not time out.

I highly recommend this especially for module developers (it will make compiling much faster)

1. Download DotNetNuke ".zip" file

2. Unzip the DotNetNuke ".zip" file to a directory

3. Go to the "\Install\Module" directory and delete everything but "Help_(version)_Install.zip" and "HTML_(version)_Install.zip"

4. Then install like normal (see my post below)

Hi, Yoyosh.

The one I tried to install is DNN 4.3.4 Starter Kit. Download it into your computer and just run it (double-click). After this go to VS2005 and create a new project (solution) based on the VB template already installed which is called DotNetNuke something (be careful to select the VB language otherwise you won't see the template). When the solution is finally created the Welcome.html page becomes active which contains all the instructions. If you follow them correctly and with a little lucky DNN 4.3.4 might get installed.

As you probably know the problem I had is that during the modules installation I got this error: "Threas was being aborted" along with some exception info (Stack Trace). Some the users have sugested to avoid installing modules or remove few of them. I am going to do it tomorrow (28th).

Hi Mihaigospodaru,

The problem occurs even earlier. I have downloaded Starter Kit 4.3.4, just as you, then I double click the "DotNetNuke.vscontent" file, I`m leaving everthing selected, and when I click "finish" to install it, I`m getting the following error:

Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist.  The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio.

What is wrong?
