Are there any developers here who have used SnowCovered in the past to sell their modules but have moved the sales over to another vendor or rolled their own? I would be interested to hear what your experiences were and what you did.

I'm looking into alternatives to SnowCovered right now, possibly a DNN solution or something like E-junkie to manage the downloads. I only have a few products listed at this point but it's quickly becoming a nightmare to update and maintain. Also, I'm finding the developer tools and reports to be equally frustrating. I have emailed support a number of items recently and they are either very very busy with other things or totally uninterested in my suggestions etc. I would have thought that the 100's of $ that they are getting from me in commission each month (25 % of sales which is way too high) would cause them to act on these problems but it looks like they are taking the short sighted approach.

To any purchasers on SnowCovered, how are your experiences?

Any ideas or feedback are welcomed.

I sell at Snowcovered and at my own site.  25% seems high, but for the traffic they have iand the tools and reports t's not too bad, plus you get 10% off as a developer, and you also get 10% referral fees even on your own products, so it often works out to much less then 25%.

A couple years ago I also listed at wwwcoder.com, but I didn't get near the volume over there, even though it was a lot less commission (it may have even been free, I can't remember).

If you want to list your modules on my site let me know. It's setup to allow other vendors with only a 10% commission.

I wouldn't expect to find a better retail outlet then Snowcovered for DotNetNuke modules anywhere you go though, they have been doing it a long time and have put in several enhancements based on developer feedback.

Thanks John,

How are you handling support, upgrades etc. between your site and SnowCovered? Are you just doing support in a single place (your site) or do you do it on both? I would think that it's a bit of a pain to update modules in more than a single place each time you upgrade a product or provide a bug fix. Also, you'd have to maintain two separate lists of customers and keep track of who purchased where etc.

Richard, 90% of my sales are through Smart-Thinker - and the other 10% on Snowcovered (I charge more to make up the 15-20% margin on SC). I think the question is, WHY would you NOT sell your modules on your own site and save the 15-20 %? I moved away from the Subbscription model about 3 months ago but I still use Scott's Ventrain Subscription Tools to list the products. I am trying to get round to evaluating Catalook and Portal Store to set it up with Affiliates and other cool features, but for a small number of modules Scott's module is fine (check my Purchase page for an example - getting a bit cluttered, I know). Send me an email if you want help configuring it...

I am also experimenting with selling other products from other vendors on my site - at the moment I am still tinkering though.

John - I would be interested in listing some of my modules on your site at 10%.... how to proceed? (Would also be a good demo for Catalook ;)

I handle support in both places, but try to drive it back to my site when possible.  Most of my customers are aware of the support on my site and go there first anyway.

To be honest, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about if a customer is supposed to have a specific version or if they actually purchased before providing support.  And I use the different channels to get the word out, but once the upgrade or patch is packaged, it's not too hard to update it in different places.

Catalook also has an option to list the products, but drive the customers back to the the originating vendor's site for purchase.

Contact me through my profile e-mail if you'd like to discuss the different options in more detail.
