I'd like to announce my intention of releasing the FIRST TeamSpeak DNN module to be made available to the public. This module will be fully integrated with DNN and run independently of any 3rd party scripts or services, using fully managed code. You will be able to list players and channels of any TeamSpeak server, by providing only the address and port.

Project goals
Phase 1 - channel and player list, all the public info
Phase 2 - TS admin functionality using DNN's role based security
Phase 3 - integration with DNN's registration & user management (synch DNN accounts with TeamSpeak accounts)
Phase 4 - compatibility with TeamSpeak 3 (not yet released)

Phase one expected release date will be by the end of Sept 2006.

Jason,

Looks interesting but can anyone tell me what's the main advantage of using Teamspeak as opposed to Skype for example. Which scenario would demand Teamspeak for example.

Thanks very much in advance for contributing to my education

Leif

TeamSpeak (aka TS) is generally used by gamers as a common way to speak to each other while they play some online game like WoW, SWG, or some other MMORPG. The server software doesn't use that many resources either -- one TS with 100 users will use under 100MB RAM, no CPU, and 50GB/month.

The next competitor is Ventrilo, but I highly suggest not doing business with them. It's some kid in his basement who won't give out mom and dad's mailing address or phone #. The free version only gives you 8 users, while TeamSpeak allows 100 users to talk at the same time.

VOIP like Skype is based on a traditional ".COM" model, geared for Wall Street. Skype makes their money through subscriptions, banner ads and spam, where TeamSpeak makes it through software licenses only. Edit: Skype requires you to register and use their servers -- where TS allows you to host it on your own private server.

The reason modules like mine will help DNN -- well maybe not my TS module so much, but take a look at a more complex module like EQDKP. This standalone PHP based script has 10 times more users than DNN, and all it does is track time spent in-game in order to help divide loot and rare in-game items.

If anyone made a DKP for DNN, DNN would instantly double its user base. And, don't tell me gamers don't have any money.
