please make sure, you keep your existing encrytion keys in web.config from previous web.config, as well as connection string and object qualifier. copy these values from previously saved old web.config to new one after unpacking the new versions' files.

I am having a similar error - except I upgraded to 3.3.4 - I did copy the SiteSqlServer, MachineValidationKey & MachineDecryptionKey from the original web.config to the new release.config - yet none of my passwords work on the portal after the upgrade.  I also had to copy over the ObjectQualifier value as well as it is in a shared DB.  The upgrade went without any critical errors that I could see.  There was a message regarding accounts existing in multiple portals - but as I was upgrading from 3.1.x I assumed this was normal - my previous upgrades gave the same warning without locking out the accounts.

If it is a problem with one of the Key values above - is there a fix beyond restoring and attempting to install again?
