Here's a screenshot of what happens when I click on a thread in the newest (3.6.8) ActiveForums module running on the newest (4.3.4) DotNetNuke:

Active Forums on DNN sending the CPU to 100%

Each time I click to view a thread, it sends the cpu to 100%.  Onyak encountered this exact same problem on ActiveForums running DNN 3.3.4, and he attributed it to placing another instance of the module on a second page.  I had another AF module (not configured) on another page as well, but I removed it, then deleted the page, and the problem remains.

When do other people see this problem?  Did anyone find a solution?

This kind of bug really worries me because it would obviously bring the whole site to a grinding halt if everyone that clicked on a forum thread sent the cpu to 100%.

I posted to activeforums boards but I haven't received a response.

Mike,

Please email support at activemodules dot com or create a support ticket on our site and we will gladly help you.

Running multiple instances of Active Forums would not cause this problem.

Thanks,

Will

I got a response from Active Forums now but its not much help in solving my problem:

----- Log Type[Research Log] User[Will M] Entry[9/1/2006 2:53:00 PM] -----
Mike, It really isn't an issue unless the processors are staying pegged at 100%. A 100% spike is not uncommon. A 100% peg processor is a problem. Also, the number of posts that you are displaying would have an impact on the processor. Thanks, Will

Could some other users take a look at the screenshot above and tell me if this would be considered normal?

Because I do not see this kind of 100% cpu utilization for several seconds with DNN Forums.  In fact, the little blips to the left of the CPU getting pegged is the traffic generated on chat AND DNN Forums for about 40 users on the site.  The giant jump in cpu utilization came with me (alone) clicking to view a thread in ActiveForums.  I am guessing that a bug in ActiveForums is causing one of the ActiveForums scripts to recompile each time it is requested by a client.  Does anyone know a way to tell if a script is being recompiled each time it is requested?

I am using 4 instances of Active Forums on DNN 4.3.5 with AF 3.6.8.15266 and I do not have these problems. During some times I have more then 5,000 concurrent connections to my site and sometimes 50 postings within 10 minutes. Do you run any maintenance on your database? I run every 24 hours several tasks to reindex the indexes etc..

Edit: In addition to this you could run the SQL profiler to see what is happening.

A spike like that is normal.  Especially if it is your first time to load the module since the app started.  You will notice that as you click on more links withing the module that the CPU will act more like you described for the other modules that are in heavy use.

I run Active Forums on my site, and I know of several other hight traffic sites that use them, and I can assure that they are more performant then the core DNN forums.
