i'm using dnn 4.3.4 and like how the user profiles have been expanded since 4.0.x, but i'm wondering how i would go about adding additional configurations specific to the portal?

for example, there are a great deal of portals being hosted on a particular dnn install.  i have a separate db that hosts a bunch of news information that may be shared by portals or can also be specific to a particular portal.  the articles are classified according to some arbitrary categorization.  how would i go about adding a setting that could be accessible by a module about the portal?  so i could then query into this other db (or tables in the same db, for that matter) based on this setting?

thanks in advance.  let me know if i need to be more specific.
