This is one of those things that has been irritating me for months.  I can't be the only one with this issue, but I cannot find another post addressing it.

Odd behaviour re: thumbnails in the skins module.
I currently have DNN 3.2.2, but have observed this in all previous 2.x and 3.x versions

When I have friendly URLs set on, rather than the thumbnails , I see the default  icon for "image not found" in the skins module. 
If friendly URLs are turned off, the thumbnails display normally.
If I delete a skin or container, suddenly I see all the thumbnails. 
Can anyone explain this?  It is not an urgent issue for me, but an irritation that I would like to resolve.

I have the same exact issue!  I also searched for a solution and never found one so I simply moved on.  I have since upgraded to the latest build and the problem remains.  It's not a crytical problem but certainly annoying.

You are certainly not the only one.
I noticed that the links have backslashes in them, which IE does but FF does not accept.
I added this to the bugtracking system, but the reaction was "cannot reproduce".
Added some more info, but no reaction yet.

But in the end it will / should get solved...

1. What version of FF and what extensions are you using (Firebug..?)
2. Are there any people using FF where these preview images do work?

I use 1.5.0.6 but I noticed this problem in DNN2.x and firefox 1.0 over a year ago and befoere I installed any extentions..  What I find really strange is that the images become visible   if one of the skins or containers are deleted. (temporarily - it reverts back if you navigate ot another tab then back)
