Having unsuccessfully tried 4.3.4 and 4.0.3 installs on Visual Web Developer  on .NET 2.0, I decided to give DNN a miss as it was devouring far too much time for a simple install. This morning while trawling the web for alternative to DNN, I had a nagging thought in the back of my mind.  The thought was that how had so many people got past the install hurdle using the starterkit? The install document refers to 4.X but many people on this forum had claimed initial success with 4.0.2. This was the only version I hadnt tried.

I dowloaded the StarterKit_4.0.2  and ran the install .... I chose to overwrite the the modules and projects that were alreadt there from my pervious 26 failed attempts..... and guess what ... my 27th attempt .... failed as well.

No template appears. This product might work for other setup scenarios but it will NOT work for ProXP , Visual Web Developer. The VWD install is fresh and works for everthing else inclusing MS Templates...... and no, I will NOT read the installation docs again.

What actually failed? What message (or messages) did you receive?

DotNetNuke is an ASP.NET application that runs under a properly configured system including the .Net framework, Internet Information Services (IIS) and SQL. Since it is designed for real world use it is subject to real world configurations including security issues. Windows XP Pro was never designed to serve web applications on the Internet nor was Visual Web Developer designed to produce live websites.  (see  http://weblogs.asp.net/esanchez/archive/2004/11/30/272101.aspx) FWIW you will find similar issues with any large project dependent upon other platforms.

That being said, DotNetNuke has been built in consideration of the entry level version of VWD to give everyone a chance to experiment with a Content Management System, even locally on Win XP Pro. If you had asked for assistance 20 or so installs ago, you may have saved yourself a lot of time and effort.

I say again as I did in all my previous posts that the template is not displayed when attempt to create a new website. I have asked for assistance ... see my previous posts.

I have not even go to the stage of testing it because the template is simply not offered as an option. IF DNN has been built in consideration of VWD why does it not even get past the very first step in the installation process?

There is still no explanation on this site as to the cause of the problem

There should not be any projects in this area.  If you already installed the VC Content file then you are halfway there.  You just "right-click" the website folder in "Solution Explorer" window and select "Add new Item".  Now you must select the "VB" language option in order to see the SKIN template.

Hope this was helpful,

You can verify proper installation by verifying the installed files in the following folders...

\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic for module_vb.zip and skin.zip
\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual Web Developer\CSharp for module_cs.zip
\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic for DotNetNuke.zip

To use them, open Visual Web Developer and select File|New Web Site and select DotNetNuke Web Application Framework. (It builds the web app). Then right click on the Solution Explorer (http://localhost/dotnetnuke) and select Add New Item. There should be a bunch of DotNetNuke things there to work with.

I just installed VWD and the DNN Starter Kit 4.3.4 on another machine and it worked fine.
