I am new to dnn and am trying to find out about its functionality. Is there a way to create relationships between the modules/data? For example if had a section that contained a list of regional branch offices and another section that contains news articles. Is there a way to associate a news article with a regional branch office? This would allow me to have related links on the news article page that would link through to the branch office details (and vice versa). There are other scenarios where I would like to associate items. Is there any ability to create these kinds of associations in dnn?

AFAIK there isn't currently an association framework of sorts to relate content in any of the core modules to other different core modules. Though, through the beauty of Open Source you could create said framework pretty easily ;)

Saying that the beauty of Open source is that you could create said framework pretty easily seems misleading.  To me that implies, that it would require changes to the DNN core to make these kinds of relationships.

Modules can be created to access the database in anyway possible.  The module developer defines the stored procedures that do queries to the database.  They have complete control about table definition, triggers, primary keys, foreign key, constraints...

Providing module development capability is NOT a feature of open source.   Community Server provides similar expansion capability but it is not open source.

Alright, so here's the beauty of open source.

The source code for the core modules is available, for free. You can take this source code and integrate your own custom relationship framework into these modules, as not cost to you (other than development time), and you can redistribute those changes, assuming you leave the copyright intact in the source code of the DotNetNuke core modules. That is the beauty of open source.

I stand corrected.  I was not meaning to poke at open source.  I missed the part where you were about talking about adding this capability to core modules.

I was thinking that the original question was how to provide relationships between data that didn't seem to fit the existing core modules.  I was thinking that the question would be best answered with creating new modules.

I agree that using open source, source and then adding to it and providing that new enhancement back to the community is the beauty of open source
