OK, I've tried searching the forums and google and for the life of me I can't find much of any information on inter-module communications. A search does turn up some really basic information, but I'm looking at using DNN as a replacement for WebSphere Portal Server, and I'd need to do a decent amount of IMC.

If I understand the basic concept, I can send a message between two modules on the same page (or on a target page) by raising a ModuleCommunication event in the sending module and having the receiving module handle onModuleCommunication. Here's what I don't get. When is the event raised in the lifecycle of an ASP.NET postback, and when can/should I use the results? For example:

Say I have 2 modules, module one, call it 'Box', contains a simple textbox and "submit" button, module two, call it 'List', contains a simple listbox. I would like to type text in the textbox in module Box, hit submit and have that text show up in the listbox in module List. (Obviously real life would be more complex).

So, in the OnClick handler for the submit button in module Box I raise an ModuleCommunication event, sending the text in the args property, right? Now, in module List I have an onModuleCommunication method which is called by the framework when the event is raised, but at what point am I in the page processing? Is this event handler called bafore the PageLoad event in module List? After? Is it undefined?

Where is stuff like this defined/documented, and where should I be posting questions about it?

Thanks,
-Walden

I have had a similar experience with IMC.  There is basic documentation only (as far as I can tell).  My plan, when I actually needed IMC, is to turn on debugging and step thru the code and see what happens and when.  After you have it all figured out is when the beauty of open source comes in.  You then have the ability to write some documentation on your findings and submit it for all of us to use and enjoy.

Don't worry, I plan on it -- I was just hoping I wouldn't be pioneering anything with DNN. I'm interested in using it for production apps, and we all know how you can tell the pioneers... they've got arrows in their chest! :)
