Hey... I would probably REM out the 2005 connection string, and make sure the old-fashioned connection string is being used which uses a SQL username/password... not the integrated windows stuff.  See if that works?

guys and gals, I am having this same error but none of the fixes discussed here are having any affect. I am getting a more detailed exception reporting with 3.1 but-- it is reporting a problem connecting to SQL 2005...I am using SQL 2000...something in the Events code is insisting on trying to connect to 05.....there is an 05 instance on the same box as the 00 instance where the DNN DB exists.....what gives? surely there is not a hard coded connection string in the code anywhere??? I checked for additional config files in the Events folder....there is one...but it is the DNN install...no connection string in there......in addition, I have another DNN 4.n instance internally(intranet)...same setup, 2000 and 2005 SQL instances side-by-side on the DB server, guess what?? works perfectly w\DNN using the 2000 DB!!! interesting to say the least.....

To be honest, I've never tried... however, I'm fairly certain that will come up soon where I work.  I am actually in the process of trying to get them to adopt DNN as our intranet portal instead of the crappy (and expensive) software we use.  I have DNN as my personal website (though more of a sandbox than anything), and have a couple other sites in the works that I want to convert to DNN from a straight shot website.

I have "some" CSS experience but kinda suck as a designer.  I'm a decent programmer, but when it comes to graphics, design and looking good... I'm really not the person to ask.

well, I got it working....

there was a cut & paste error in the connection string under the AppSettings section....i.e., value="Server=Server=ENVOY\SQL2000.....

removed one of the "Server=" , also completely removed the SQL2005 connection string info....

it was probably the error in the AppSettings connection string, though, on the surface, it LOOKS like it should be using the one from the connectionString section, you never know unless you examine every line of code.....so, as the comments in the config file say, "some legacy modules use this connection string"

thanks to all who posted, thanks to the DNN team, I've been using DNN since v1 and it's a great piece of work....

I am having the same issue and am using SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition.  What do you mean by regular old SQL authentication string?  My string in app settings is as follow with "*" meaning not divulging the information :)

The name of my database must be "DotNetNuke"?  Or can I use what ever name I choose?

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="server=**.**.***.**;database=*******;uid=**********;pwd=********;" />

I have DNN 4.3.5 installed and am having the same issue when choosing Settings as an admin in the Event module.  Below are my Connection string and App string for my database.  It seems straigh forward.  Can anyone help to see if my string is causing the error?  * = privacy

connectionString:

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="server=**.**.***.**;database=*******;uid=************;pwd=********;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

appSettings:

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="server=**.**.***.**;database=*******;uid=************;pwd=********;" />
