I haven't been able to locate anything using the search features of this forum, and I didn't see anything in the documentation, so I'm asking here in the Configure It forum - hope this is the right place for this.

I have a standard Windows Server 2003 Enterprise installation, no Active Directory, no domain, no Exchange, etc.  I'm running (successfully) a DotNetNuke 4.0.3 website, and I'd like to configure it to use the SMTP server I've configured in IIS 6 for sending mail from the portal itself.

I can't figure out how I'm supposed to specify the settings to use the server that it's running on for SMTP.  I've tried just about everything I can think of and regardless of the setting, when I hit "Test", I get an error "Error: Host Settings is currently unavailable.".

I've gone as far as to specify the administrator account for the server, but whatever I try all I seem to get is the above specified error.

Any help will be appreciated it.

p.s. it appears the "Preview" part of this forum doesn't work either...learned that after retyping this message once in FireFox and once in IE...grr

It should work the same as any other SMTP server if you have the SMTP service configured correctly.  The hostname should work with "localhost"

My advice though, is not to use the MS SMTP service (it is very crude and hard to administer).

You can get many free and better SMTP software packages that are better. I recommend SmarterMail from http://www.smartertools.com

With that you'll even get free webmail for one domain and up to 10 users.

I have the same problem. I run my own mailserver (using MailEnable). Everytime I click 'Test', I get the error below. I've stopped the MailEnable SMTP service and tried using Windows XP's SMTP service, but I get the same message. Any ideas?

Error: Host Settings is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String MailFrom, String MailTo, String Cc, String Bcc, MailPriority Priority, String Subject, MailFormat BodyFormat, Encoding BodyEncoding, String Body, String Attachment, String SMTPServer, String SMTPAuthentication, String SMTPUsername, String SMTPPassword) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String MailFrom, String MailTo, String Bcc, String Subject, String Body, String Attachment, String BodyType, String SMTPServer, String SMTPAuthentication, String SMTPUsername, String SMTPPassword) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Host.HostSettingsModule.cmdEmail_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I've email working with DNN4 in the past, but I've uninstalled DNN4 and installed DNN3.3.5 instead.

John,

I use IIS SMTP mail and I don't see any problems with it. As a matter of fact I have used it for years as a 'send only' engine for all my sites. I had a look at smartertools but I see no benefit at all if you need it for sending mail.

One thing I like about SmarterMail is that you can configure it to block people from sending using several different parameters.  As an SMTP server you can use it for unlimited senders and the web interface is a lot easier for administration then trying to figure out MS SMTP.
