Ed,

Nothing personal but I have seen the same problem posted numerous times and have yet to see a resolution. I am frustrated because I have spent the the last few days trying to get DNN to work. I want it to work but have run out of ideas. This error message is really of no help. It looks to me that the database population is failing or failed and DNN is trying to find this storedproc without success. It is NOT a connection string problem.

I really do appreciate the response and I am happy to follow your instructions. However, I am not trying to install the development environment. I simply want the portal. I tired both the install.zip and the installer v 0.0.8. I got the same result. Do you think your instructions will help with my problem?

The directions explain how using the normal install version can be used for development. The directions show the normal install process.

We are attempting to help you.

Nothing personal taken, but if you reailze that we have over 350,000 registered users and many, many hundreds of thousands of DNN downloads to date, the problem doesn't crop up as often as yoou appear to think it does.

My best advice right now is to follow Micheals instructions to get your portal up and running.

Not sure why the installer is not working for you, could be an environment issue possibly.

IMO, the installer is the way to go if you're not experienced with manual installs and/or are having issues with the install. Because the installer will take care of most of the behind the scenes permissions, etc.

BTW, this IS a connection string issue if none of the DB stored procs or tables are getting created. Have you checked that the SQL user you're specifying has dbowner rights in SQL?

I'm trying to upgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.3.5 on a remote server. So - file structure and web site are all set up.

Uploaded the _upgrade_ version of 4.3.5 and unzipped it over the existing files. Edited release.config to reflect correct connection string (two places) and machine keys (one place) and saved it as web.config.

Opened a browser and went to the site, and got this error. The db is MS SQL 2000. The connection strings are correct - I can connect remotely to the database with the credentials. As per Ed's suggestion I double-checked the database roles for this user and it is n the db_owner role, as well as public and the three aspnet FullAccess roles.

Why's this happening?

Thanks - Mike

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
