You ask for thoughts:

1. The DNN gallery forums have 106 threads, 476 posts, and about 60,800 views.

60,800/106 ~=~ 574 people seriously trying to get the module to work.

Hans Peter Schelian DNNPortal.de site shows 590 downloads of "bug fix core gallery (beta) 3.0.10 for DNN 3.1.1"

It looks like this module has a core set of fans.

2.  The DNN download page offers Gallery that is not setup for 3.1.1 and could be versioned because of the Businesscontrollerclass issue.  Sometimes, I'm a slow learner, and lost a couple of days researching this issue.

*  Wish List item:  it would be nice if the module could sense the core module version at time of install.  Similar to the upgrade that checked the version of the data provider and proceeds with upgrade.  Unfortunately, changes might possiby effect other non-core PAs.

3.  You appear to be asking for users' help.  ( something of an oxymoron)  Clarification of what you would like help on might be in order.

For example;

I'd like to have some volunteers to provide manual testing on the Gallery project.  Participant will be assigned a provided web site with specific DNN-core version. (These sites may include older and/or yet to be released cores.)

Test files provided will be renamed by prefacing with the participants initials.  You are encouraged to try any additional files that you might like.

Task will include the install of the module to be tested.  Useability testing will include uploading files of various formats, proceeding though a checklist of all tabs and useability features (Guestimated at 30 min.), and reporting errors and exceptions.  - The checklist will be repeated for four days.

Participant will then uninstall and clean up the portal to run subsequent test module revisions.

Sign-up here to volunteer:

then sign me up.

My suggestion is that if there is a "version" of the code that is ready enough to install on a testing site, then make the code available.  The burden of maintaining a testing site is too much for one person who is seemingly overloaded as it is.

The whole idea of an opensource project is so that many people can participate / help.  The way the Gallery project seems to managed now is that one person is doing all the work and 574 others are waiting around.

Release the code as a "beta" version and let 574 people install it, test it, etc .  Then post the feedback here.

One of the problems is NOT a lack pf places to post feedback. Its that there is too many: here, ASP.NET, Gemini...

I appreciate the opinions here.  Please let me clear a few things up.  The problem is not a lack of too many places to post feedback, the problem is people not understand the specifics of each one.  The asp.net forums are where dnn started and where general core things happen.  If you want to speak on specific projects or things within dnn, you use these forums here.  Gemini is not really a place most users need to be using.  It should only receive bugs, which many things entered are not bugs.

You can all say what  you want about release, release, release but none of you have done it.  Once you release a Core DNN project then you tell me how you feel about it.  Not meaning to bring anyone down, just trying to get the point across that it is definately one of those things you won't understand unless you do it.  Every release, even beta, that goes out I get lots of not so nice fan mail and posts to deal with.  You guys talk about its been forever and a day for a gallery release, but it has been less than four months.  This all comes back to why I would prefer a test site for people to test it before packaging even a final beta.  The data collection there (ie. forums) would be to keep the information seperate for a version that isn't released.  This would avoid in confusion within this community, which makes lots of sense if you think about it.  The only feedback we want on these forums is released versions.

I have taken a different approach w/ the gallery module more than me being overloaded.  (Not that I have an abundance of time)

But why have the project basically fall on one single person for coding, testing, maintain test site, moderating forums, etc.?  When, as per above, there are some 574 people who are actively trying to get this module to work?  All they have to work with is a 4 month old copy of source code.

If there was a released set of code that fixed ONLY the "header" maintenance bug, the object not referenced bug and like 2 other things, the volume of issues posted here would be cut in half.

Instead, I read about a new skin being made and goodness knows what else is being added.  Bugs that affect ability for the module to plain ole' work should take priority and get released before anyone works on new features.  New skins can be done by the users themselves and added without even looking at the source code, let alone modifying it.

Seems like you have about 500 people willing to use their own server as a test platform and you know they will provide the feedback <g>. So, why take on the burden of setting up and maintaining another site?

The code that is released now is specifically beta code. It has numerous problems where it FLAT OUT does not work for more than an hour.  How can another version of code be any worse?  Why do you alone have to respond to the messages or moderate the forum?

What I don't need is another skin or another test site. What I do need is that object reference thing issue to go away.

Jeff,

I agree with most of what you are saying, but it is similar to a theory that is unproven.  If people were so willing to help how come not a single person has ever contacted me about contributing code?  You come back to the object reference issue going away but if you were in the true open source spirit you would have proposed the fix or contacted me with it.  There is nothing here saying you guys can't help speed things up.  Since people have been reluctant to do anything aside from post errors or try to help others, I have thought of a different approach for others to contribute which ultimately speeds the process up.  This release is not about skins being added or anything else for that matter.  All of that stopped and focus was changed to only bug fixes.

I do want to clear up one thing and that is that I am not alone.  You hear from me more than anyone else because I take it upon myself to be the vocal one in the group.  There are three others involved with this project who work and checkin code aside from myself.
