I looked at the details in the install pdf documents and there is says that the file permissions for the ASPNET User account (IIS5) should have:

Read, Write, Modify Access to the root folder and all child folders

Then it says

that the DestopModules and Portals and child folders of the Portals folder should have Write/Modify permission.

As I think about this, I wonder how I am supposed to see files using DNN File Manager without read permissions and how I can to get files there without Create permissions.  in the portals/0 directory?

Am I missing how the file security setting effect DNN?

I am also trying to Verify the file permissions with the hosting company.

No worries, I've just never heard anyone refer to the "common tasks" area before... I was thinking about menus and page titles!  Funny.

I would encourage you to take a look at the online help here, and see if you can follow what is happening.

Bear with us, its just hard to diagnose without something to look at.  I assure you, this functionality works quite well... we'd be in big trouble if it didn't!

Cheers

The hosting company has confirmed the permissions mentioned in the above message.  And still no go.  Nothing in the log viewer when trying to create a directory or upload a file.

And many thanks to those people that have responded to my messages so far.  I really wish I knew more about DNN, this is clearly my first experience, and first experience with web design in many years.  But I must say it is obvious from what I have seen so far  Content Management Systems like DNN are the future on the web, no question about it.  Still a bit bleeding edge as I am suffereing with right now.  But the perfect tool for what my non-profit organization needs.  And DNN Still looks to be the best package, despite my current setback.

So here are some more details,   I will try to give you a feel for what I am seeing.  Just a few minutes ago I tried (logged in as host) to use the File Manager from under the Host menu.  When I did the normal File Manager page opened up.  In the left (folder side) is "Host Root" and nothing else, the right side is empty which seems a bit odd to me.

I tried to create a directory by typing in a test name in the small box next to the picture of the green + sign over a folder and the words Add Folder.  The screen looks like nothing changes at all, other then the grey bar at the bottom of the screen (part of Internet Explorer) has the words "Error on page"  and that is all there is.

next I try to upload a file.  I click the Upload word and picture of the green up arrow.  The page refreshes, bottom of the page say "opening page http://(same page)  And nothing else happens.

If I change things up a little and access the file manager from under the admin menu, while still logged in as host things look a little different.  I can see the Folders has "Portal Root" and the Files side has a list of files like aspnet.gif, book_dummies1,jpg (16 files total).

What is interesting is that my logo file is also there as the 17th file.  This file got there by me uploading it from the Site Setting screen.  I have also uploaded a skin file (boxed4css) and that works well.

I think it is really odd that the uploads of skins and logo that came from other screens in DNN worked but DNN File Manager does not work for me.

I have also uploaded some directories using FTP to the portals/0 directory and the FTP worked and the folders are there to view using the FTP program, but DNN File manager doesn't see them.  I figure this might be because the folders were not created in DNN and even if they are there they may not have a corisponding database entry and DNN file manager might not actually read the directory, either that or this is another symptom.

Obviously, DNNs File manager has been used and tested to a great extent.  And I have used it once before on a different install on a friend computer setup to be a host (kind of him but not what we need for an non-profit organization that is over 50 years old now and will like be around for many years to come.  We need person independance on the web site).

Hopefully, someone has experienced a similar set of symptoms and can explain this.  There has to be an explanition - most likely like I messed something up or the host provider doesn't have things working/configured correctly on their end.

Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

If there are some trouble shooting ideas please let me know what I could try next.   This still sounds permission related to me.  But what exactly should I be asking the hosting provider for?  Was what I asked for before correct?  Should I ask for more as part of a test.

I am also curious about which accounts specificaly need permisions.  I was talking about the ASPNet User is this the correct user and are there others I need to worry about.  They already gave my database user DBO rights.

Thanks in Advance.

I can upload an image to a newly created directory using the "Image" module but when I use the "File Manager" to do the upload this is no working.

I'm willing to give admin login details for the core team to look at.
