What's New is a very important module. Unfortunately, the current module has very real problems and we get no real help to fix it. We need to talk about this module. It could be the centre of most websites, but not the way it is today. A few simple changes or options would make it universally acceptable. Instead of picking up everything newly added to a site, we should be able to select the modules that are monitored. Please, can we talk? What's New needs a forum or at least a reply from the project lead.

I agree 100%. This module is critical to leading visitors to new content. The current module is worthless. I edited two links in a links box and my what's new module shows 8 copies of each link, pushing new HTML pages way down the stack.

Just now I thought I'd take a look at the code and see if I can figure something out. Ha, no source appears to be available. It's not included in the 3.3.5 source package anyway. Perhaps I should try earlier releases?

In any event, core folks please create a home for "what's new" so we can start working on it. Please do this even if there is no core sponsor or project lead yet.

The What's New module only does one thing, it reads the search indexer. This means it is not filtering content at all and depends on ISearchable. I have never used this module, nor am I experienced with it. I know Reports is one, but is Whats New another that is only source for 4x?

AFAIK What's New was donated code and no one has volunteered for the team lead yet. I agree, that there should be a project home with forums for it.
