I hope that you can help me out with this.  I am searching for a strong CMS system with all the bells & whistles and think that DNN may be the perfect match, however I have some questions if someone could provide guidance?

  1. Is the key difference between 3x and 4x that 4x is asp 2.0?
  2. I'm gathering that 4x uses compiled code.  Does 3x as well or is it all asp based that you wouldn't necessarily need VB to work with?
  3. Is development going to continue for 3x and although I can't hold anyone to this answer, but for what foreseeable future?
  4. Are most of the mods out there cross compatible with 3x and 4x?
  5. The basis of most of my quesitons are that I'm quite comfortable with ASP and I do VB programming but haven't bought into the .net development as every time I do something in it, it creates about 500% more lines of code than I would by writing by hand.  If 3x is strictly non-compiled, I'm obviously leaning toward that.  Comments?
  6. Are there scalaing issues when you compare 4x to 3x?
  7. Can part of a DNN site be public and part private (requiring login)?  So that some elements (like a calendar) are public but forums are private?
  8. Has anyone heard of any mod (or maybe it's built in) where membership is controlled by "company" members and each company has an "admin" (the first person to sign them up) which has authority to add up to X users (x being limited by membership costs)???
Thanks in advance to all that answer.

Kevin

  1. yes
  2. 4.x uses precompiled code for core framework, not for modules (except 3.x modules). 3.x uses precompiled code for modules and framework
  3. It is expected, that 3.3.x will be the last DNN3 version
  4. DNN4 modules don't run in DNN3, but DNN3 modules in DNN4
  5. DNN3 uses ASP.Net 1.1 and DNN4 ASP.Net 2.0. There is NO dotnetnuke running on classig ASP without .Net
  6. no
  7. yes
  8. there are 3rd party modules to extend membership, but as this has undergone major changes in DNN 3.3.0/4.3.0, I am not up  to date, have a look yourself at www.snowcovered.com
